September Reflections

September Reflections
by Caylie Warkentin

The warmth of a lingering summer has given way to a gentle fall. This season is a time of transition, of adaptation. We immerse ourselves in more intense work and school schedules, begin to get used to shorter days.

Mindfulness becomes an important element in our day. We choose slowness and stillness through the flicker of a candle flame, honey-sweetened tea that warms us from the inside, and the nostalgia of a well-read book with worn edges and dog-eared pages.

Maintaining wellness becomes an act of intentionality. We choose wellness in our daily rituals - through comforting food and nurturing community.

Food somehow tastes better when it's homegrown. On October 2nd, UBC Farm is presenting the Joy of Feeding - an outdoor food festival and fundraiser featuring twelve local chefs situated on Vancouver's organic farm, where they'll prepare their favourite family recipes.

Can't attend? Recipes will be posted online so that you can recreate their beloved dishes at home.

Ground yourself in the city's 55-acre botanical garden, a reprieve from dense urban sprawl. Come fall, VanDusen Garden presents Harvest Days, an opportunity to discover their vegetable garden and maze while enjoying fall treats and fall colours like yellow ginkgo trees and the deep red of Chinese maples.

Find the Harvest Days schedule here.
Canadian scientist, environmentalist, writer, and Vancouver resident David Suzuki published The Sacred Balance twenty-five years ago - one of his most beloved books. With captivating language, this text captures the importance of Indigenous environmental knowledge.

Shop the updated and revised 25th Anniversary Edition (with a forward by Robin Wall Kimmerer) - coming out October 25.
